Domestic Exiles presents photographic works that construct an image of the “self” in exile in dialogue with art historical discourse. “Exile” is defined as the “banishment and expulsion from one’s home or country (The New Webster’s Encyclopedic Dictionary of the English Language).” This belies an underlying complexity - the term is metaphorically rich, saturated with personal history. Here, Kinga Araya playfully and thoughtfully explores the limits of this concept. She both makes use of and transcends her domestic context, referring to painterly and photographic traditions of portraiture as well as critical theory.
